The 2007 edition of Social Trends was published, bringing together a wide range of statistics on many aspects of contemporary society and how it had changed over the years. It focused on children and young people. Nearly a quarter (24 per cent) of children in Great Britain were living in lone-parent families in 2006, more than three times the proportion in 1972.There were almost three times as many further education students in the United Kingdom in 2004-05 as in 1970-71. The proportion of children aged under five who were at school increased threefold in the same period, from 21 per cent in 1970-71 to 64 per cent in 2005-06.
